1. On Estimating Topology and Divergence Times in Phylogenetics
Sammanfattning : This PhD thesis consists of an introduction and five papers, dealing with statistical methods in phylogenetics.A phylogenetic tree describes the evolutionary relationships among species assuming that they share a common ancestor and that evolution takes place in a tree like manner. 2. Bayesian Phylogenetic Inference : Estimating Diversification Rates from Reconstructed Phylogenies
Sammanfattning : Phylogenetics is the study of the evolutionary relationship between species. Inference of phylogeny relies heavily on statistical models that have been extended and refined tremendously over the past years into very complex hierarchical models. LÄS MER
3. Probabilistic Modelling of Domain and Gene Evolution
Sammanfattning : Phylogenetic inference relies heavily on statistical models that have been extended and refined over the past years into complex hierarchical models to capture the intricacies of evolutionary processes. The wealth of information in the form of fully sequenced genomes has led to the development of methods that are used to reconstruct the gene and species evolutionary histories in greater and more accurate detail. 4. Phylogenetic Relationships, Biogeography and Species Delimitation: A case study on southern African Silene (Caryophyllaceae)
Sammanfattning : The primary aim of this thesis was to explore the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography of African members of the plant genus Silene (Caryophyllaceae), with special focus on the eight native southern African taxa. Three loci (the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, and the rps16 and matK regions from the plastid genome) generated using traditional Sanger sequencing were used to infer the phylogenetic positions of African taxa, while sequence data from 28 low copy nuclear loci were generated using the target capture method to explore shallow phylogenetic relationships within southern African taxa. 5. Phylogenomics of Oceanic Bacteria
Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis has been the phylogenomics and evolution of the Alphaproteobacteria. This is a very diverse group which encompasses bacteria from intraceullar parasites, such as the Rickettsiales, to freeliving bacteria such as the most abundant bacteria on earth, the SAR11. LÄS MER
