6. High-contrast imaging of low-mass companions and debris disks
Sammanfattning : The search for exoplanets, i.e., planets orbiting other stars than the Sun, is a relatively new research field, but has already established itself as one of the most prolific and intriguing areas of astronomy. LÄS MER
7. Magnetic Fields and Chemical Spots in HgMn Stars
Sammanfattning : Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars belong to the class of chemically peculiar (CP) stars. It was recently discovered that some HgMn stars have spots of chemical elements on their surfaces. LÄS MER
8. High-resolution radio imaging of galaxy nuclei
Sammanfattning : Star formation and galaxy evolution are intimately linked together. A detailed understanding of the environment where stars form may help us explain the differences we see between galaxies today and at earlier times in the history of the Universe. LÄS MER
9. Studies of Double and Multiple Stars Using Space Astrometry
Sammanfattning : This thesis introduces and summarizes four papers dealing with the study of double and multiple stars using space astrometry. The introduction gives a brief review of the role of binary observations in various fields of astronomy --- star formation, stellar masses and the mass-luminosity relation, initial mass function, detection of sub-stellar mass companions. 10. High-contrast imaging of faint substellar companions and debris disks
Sammanfattning : Star formation results in the accumulation of circumstellar material orbiting around their host stars, such as debris disks and planetary-mass objects. A relatively modern technique that has shown to be very valu- able for studying these faint companions is high-contrast imaging, which allows to distinguish the light emitted or scattered off these objects, otherwise hidden behind the brighter stellar halo.
