  1. 6. Human extraocular muscles : molecular diversity of a unique muscle allotype

    Författare :Daniel Kjellgren; Fatima Pedrosa-Domellöf; Lars-Erik Thornell; Lillemor Wachtmeister; John Porter; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Ophtalmology; extraocular; muscle; myosin; protein c; laminin; serca; immunocytochemistry; human; Oftalmiatrik; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi; oftalmiatrik; Ophtalmology;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: The extraocular muscles (EOMs) are considered a separate class of skeletal muscle, allotype. Myosin is the major contractile protein in muscle. The myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms are the best molecular markers of functional heterogeneity of muscle fibers. LÄS MER

  2. 7. The role of sarcoplasmic calcium in skeletal muscle training adaptation

    Författare :Niklas Ivarsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Current research shows a clear correlation between strong mitochondrial capacity, healthy muscle and general public health. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of a whole host of so called ‘western diseases’, while an active lifestyle reduce the risk of said diseases. Thus, well-functioning muscles are a necessity for general health. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Characterization of membrane protein active transport under native-like conditions

    Författare :Harsha Ravishankar; Magnus Andersson; Pål Stenmark; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : P-type ATPase proteins are a family of membrane proteins that maintain concentration gradients of e.g. ions by ATP-driven transport across the membrane. While these transporters share many features in their molecular architecture, structural differences are required to convey ion specificity. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Role of calcium in developing cellular network : Ca2+ in human fetal neural stem cells and rat neonatal cardiomyocytes

    Författare :Jeongsook Park; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to study Ca2+ homeostasis and its regulation in developing heart and brain cells. Cardiomyocytes rapidly developed a fast calcium machinery, (1) to regulate cytoskeletal protein interactions to the extracellular matrix of neighboring cells through gap junctions, and (2) to induce Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR) from sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), (3) to generate rapid energy supply of ATP from mitochondria. 5. 10. Cellular mechanisms of human muscle fatigue and disease-related loss of muscle function

    Författare :Karl Olsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : A loss of skeletal muscle function and mass is a hallmark of several diseases resulting in a dismal life quality and poor prognosis. Impaired intracellular Ca2+- handling has been proposed as an underlying cause of these manifestations. LÄS MER
