26. Quantitative conservation genetics of the rare plants Scabiosa canescens (Dipsacaceae) and Silene diclinis (Caryophyllaceae)
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns quantitative genetic aspects of the conservation biology of two rare plants, Scabiosa canescens and Silene diclinis. Particular attention was given to the effects of genetic drift on the structuring of variation in allozymes and quantitative characters, the association between (current) population size and quantitative genetic variation, the level of inbreeding depression in fitness characters and morphology in a small, isolated population, and the effect of inbreeding and intraspecific hybridization on developmental instability. 27. Genetic analysis of autoimmune diseases using animal models : Mapping susceptibility genes for multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis are common human diseasesaffecting 1% and 0.1% of the population respectively. These diseases are characterized by abnormal self-tolerance in the immune system and autoimmune reactions. LÄS MER
28. Genetic factors influencing susceptibility to intracellular infections
Sammanfattning : Genetics of susceptibility to infection is a complex trait in which many factors from the host, the parasite and the environment, interact to produce different clinical manifestations of disease. This thesis explores the relationship between the first infectious susceptibility gene ever cloned, SLC11A1 and the occurrence of intracellular infections (leprosy, leishmaniasis and HIV infection) in several populations of humans. 29. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution. 30. Exploring Coagulation Properties in Bovine Milk Using Milk Genomics Approaches
Sammanfattning : Swedish Red (SR) dairy cattle is the second most common breed in Sweden and hence SR milk quality is crucial for the nutritional value and the processability of the milk delivered to the Swedish dairies. This thesis will give an insight into the quality of milk from SR cows and it will illuminate the possibilities for improvements of both breeding programs and the quality of different dairy products, focusing on cheese characteristics.
