  1. 6. Blood Vessels, Biomarkers, and Broken Barriers: lnvestigations of the Brain Vasculature in Models of Neonatal Brain lnjuries

    Författare :E. Axel Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neonatal brain injury; hypoxia ischemia; germinal matrix haemorrhage; blood brain barrier; tight‐junctions; blood vessels;

    Sammanfattning : Brain injury during the perinatal period can lead to lifelong impairment in cognitive and motor function, or an early death. Term neonatal encephalopathy and preterm germinal matrix haemorrhage are two conditions that can irreversibly injure the brain, but clinical tools for diagnosing and treating these pathologies are lacking. 2. 7. Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage and post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation in preterm infants: new mechanistic insights and potential treatment strategies

    Författare :Olga Romantsik; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prematurity; Intraventricular hemorrhage; Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; White matter injury; Gray matter injury; Preterm rabbits; Extracellular hemoglobin; a-1-microglobulin; animal IVH models; High frequency ultrasound; MRI; corticogenesis;

    Sammanfattning : Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the major co-morbidities of premature birth associated with post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) development, long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, behavioral problems, special educational needs, and dependency on social security.Hypothesis and aims: We believe that extravasated blood and further release of extracellular hemoglobin (Hb) are crucial in brain injury following IVH and consequent development of PHVD. 3. 8. Brain imaging and outcome in extremely preterm infants

    Författare :Béatrice Skiöld; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In parallel to the dawn of modern neonatal intensive care, the survival after extremely preterm birth has greatly improved. These very immature children are born during a vulnerable phase of brain maturation, and are at high risk of brain injury and subsequent neurodevelopmental impairments. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Background aEEG/EEG measures in very preterm infants : Relation to physiology and outcome

    Författare :Sverre Wikström; Lena Hellström-Westas; Ingmar Rosén; Andrew Whitelaw; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Electroencephalography; brain damage; prediction; interburst interval; Neurodevelopmental impairment; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to characterize single-channel aEEG/EEG, recorded during the first postnatal days in preterm infants, in relation to brain function and two-year outcome. Study I investigated if aEEG/EEG was associated with neonatal brain injury, inflammation and outcome in 16 very preterm (VPT) infants. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Perinatal Staphylococcus epidermidis infection and the immature brain: a neuroinflammatory link

    Författare :Giacomo Gravina; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; S. epidermidis; neonatal brain injury; hypoxia-ischemia; microglia; neuroinflammation; S. epidermidis; neonatal brain injury; hypoxia-ischemia; microglia; neuroinflammation;

    Sammanfattning : Preterm birth and its associated complications are among the most serious global health issues that modern society faces. Due to the prolonged medical care and immature immune system, preterm infants have a higher susceptibility to infections, which puts them at a higher risk of developing neurological impairments as well as neurodevelopmental diseases.
