  1. 11. Design, production and characterization of synthetic immunogens : application on Plasmodium falciparum malaria antigens

    Författare :Anders Sjölander; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The development of synthetic subunit vaccines is presently one of the major strategies to construct vaccines against infectious diseases. Such vaccines are based on isolated and characterized immunogens and should include appropriate B- and T-cell epitopes. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Molecular basis for the mechanism of action and resistance to artemisinin combination therapy in Plasmodium falciparum

    Författare :Pedro Ferreira; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Plasmodium falciparum;

    Sammanfattning : Malaria, caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, remains a leading cause of death among children in Africa. To improve treatment efficacy and delay development and spread of antimalarial drug resistance artemisinin artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) is now globally recommended as first-line treatment of uncomplicated P. 3. 13. Carbohydrate-mediated adhesion in Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Författare :Antonio Barragan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Plasmodium falciparum; malaria; erythrocyte rosetting; humoral immunity; glycosaminoglycan; heparan sulfate; heparin; ABO blood groups; Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1; var genes;

    Sammanfattning : Characterization of virulence factors in P. falciparum malaria is essential in order to identify new therapeutic and prophylactic targets. Rosette formation, the binding of uninfected red blood cells to parasite-infected red blood cells, is a P. falciparum virulence phenotype associated with severe clinical manifestations, e. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Diversity and dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Författare :Anna Färnert; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; diversity; genotyping; PCR; msp1; msp2; glurp; dynamics; synchronicity; consistency; clinical protection; transmission; Tanzania; travellers;

    Sammanfattning : The epidemiology of genetic diversity of malaria parasites in relation to clinical parameters, acquisition of immunity and malaria transmission has implications for the development and evaluation of control measures such as vaccines and drugs. The diversity and dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum infections were therefore studied with a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based genotyping method targeting three highly polymorphic genes coding for potential vaccine candidate antigens: the two merozoite surface proteins msp1 block 2 and msp2 and the glutamine rich protein (glurp). 5. 15. Plasmodium falciparum malaria and anaemia in childhood

    Författare :Håkan Ekvall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; haemolytic anaemia; complement; band 3 protein; chloroquine; sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine; iron; micronutrients; prospective studies; child; Tanzania;

    Sammanfattning : Childhood anaemia represents a major health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. The anaemia is multifactorial and the result of a synergism between infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies and inherited red cell disorders. LÄS MER
