  1. 6. Pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism and clinical effects of the antimalarial artemisinin : Time-dependencies and modeling aspects

    Författare :Ulrika Sigrid Helena Svensson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Biopharmaceutics; Biofarmaci;

    Sammanfattning : The mechanism behind artemisinin time-dependent bioavailability was investigated using a rat in-situ single-pass jejunal perfusion technique. The consequence for drug combination therapy was studied in healthy volunteers and in patients with Plasmodium falciparum. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Plasmodium falciparum malaria and anaemia in childhood

    Författare :Håkan Ekvall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; haemolytic anaemia; complement; band 3 protein; chloroquine; sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine; iron; micronutrients; prospective studies; child; Tanzania;

    Sammanfattning : Childhood anaemia represents a major health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. The anaemia is multifactorial and the result of a synergism between infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies and inherited red cell disorders. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimalarial combination therapy

    Författare :Sofia Friberg Hietala; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; antimalarials; artemisinins;

    Sammanfattning : In the face of growing drug resistance, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued recommendations strongly encouraging the use of combination therapies to combat uncomplicated malaria. Amongst the most effective treatments are those combining an artemisinin derivative with a longer acting component such as amodiaquine, lumefantrine or piperaquine. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Malaria : multiclonal infections and protective immunity

    Författare :Anne Liljander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The mortality and morbidity attributable to malaria remain high in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially among children less than five years of age. In areas of high transmission, immunity to clinical malaria is gradually acquired after repeated exposure to the polymorphic Plasmodium falciparum parasite. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Surface antigens in Plasmodium falciparum malaria : PfEMP1 and SURFIN4.2

    Författare :Maria del Pilar Quintana Varon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Plasmodium falciparum malaria is an infectious disease that on despite of the ongoing eradication efforts is still endemic in more than 100 countries, sometimes causing severe disease that leads to the death of around half a million people per year. Malaria pathology is tightly associated with the parasite cycle inside the human red blood cells (RBCs). LÄS MER
