16. Involvement of T lymphocyte subsets in the rejection of murine tumors by syngeneic or autologous hosts
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to study the requirement of CD4+ and CD8+ T Iymphocyte subset, CD28 costimulatory molecule and p56kk for the rejection of syngeneic tumor grafts, and the autochthonous tumors induced by Moloney murine sarcoma virus. It also addresses the role of CD4+ and CD8+ T subsets with regard to the polyomavirus persistence and tumor development. LÄS MER
17. Butyrophilin- and Butyrophilin-like genes and their role in epithelial cell-intraepithelial T lymphocyte cross-talk
Sammanfattning : More than 50% of our immune system is located in the gut. The intestinal epithelium, which forms an interface between the organism and the environment, harbors intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) that comprise a mixture of conventional αβ T cells and unconventional αβ- and γδ T cells. 18. Studies on stress in African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) : Stress associated cortisol and prolactin levels, lymphocyte modulation and pathological changes in adrenal cortex, stomach and hippocampus in the African green monkey (C. aethiops)
Sammanfattning : African green monkeys (AGMs) are highly susceptible to captivity-induced stress. An investigation of spontaneous deaths of laboratory confined AGMs at the Institute of Primate Research, Nairobi, Kenya over a period of 7.5 years documented mild to severe gastric mucosal erosions and ulcers in 83 of 260 (32%) necropsies. 19. Preclinical therapeutic vaccination strategies in malignancies with focus on B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Sammanfattning : A therapeutic strategy that may potentially delay progression or prevent relapse of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL), is anti-leukemic vaccine therapy. This thesis focuses on comparing different strategies for loading antigen on dendritic cells (DC) with the aim of delineating the most effective antigen presentation platform for stimulating anti-leukemic T cells. 20. Characterisation of human fetal mesenchymal stem cells
Sammanfattning : Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are present in various tissues of fetal and adult origin. I isolated and expanded MSCs from human fetal 1st trimester livers and observed that they have a shorter cell doubling time compared to adult bone marrow-derived MSCs. LÄS MER
