  1. 36. Short and long term effects of bacterial gastrointestinal infection

    Författare :Anders Ternhag; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Gastroenteritis; acute infectious diarrhea; Salmonella; Campylobacter; mortality; complications; morbidity; late effects; epidemiology; hospitalization; cohort study;

    Sammanfattning : The objectives of this thesis were to increase our understanding of the mortality and complications associated with bacterial gastrointestinal infections, with focus on Salmonella and Campylobacter enteritis. The effect of antibiotics vs. placebo on duration of diarrhea in Campylobacter enteritis was also examined. LÄS MER

  2. 37. Measuring long-term effects of a school improvement initiative

    Författare :Joakim Svärdh; Inga-Britt Skogh; Erik Mellander; Veronica Bjurulf; Monica Rosén; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Propensity Score Analysis PSA ; effect study; quantitative evaluation; educational intervention; compulsory school; Science and Technology for All Initiative; representative sample; non-random selection; multi-level modelling; post-matching multivariate regression;

    Sammanfattning : There is a growing demand for studies applying quantitative methods to large-scale data sets for the purpose of evaluating the effects of educational reforms (UVK, 2010). In this thesis the statistical method, Propensity Score Analysis (PSA), is presented and explored in the evaluating context of an extensive educational initiative within science and technology education; the Science and Technology for All-program (NTA). 3. 38. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty : patient selection, long- term outcomes, and side effects

    Författare :Joar Sundman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is the most common surgical treatment for adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Its short-term efficacy, as measured through polysomnography, is well-established and has been demonstrated in two randomized controlled trials in recent years. LÄS MER

  4. 39. Long-term development, modeling and management of nutrient loading to inland and coastal waters

    Författare :Amelie Darracq; Georgia Destouni; Andrea Rinaldo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Nutrients; catchments; environmental management; climate change; population and lifestyle development; subsurface-surface water interactions; long-term simulations; nutrient retention; modeling; hydrology; transport processes; biogeochemistry; scaling; transport and reaction rates; Physical Geography; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning;

    Sammanfattning : Environmental and water system protection and restoration require accurate knowledge and quantification of waterborne pollutant transport, retention-release and transformation processes taking place in the subsurface, river, lake and sea water systems, and at the interfaces between these systems. This thesis investigates the importance of spatial model resolution for such quantification and the possible long-term nutrient load development under different human perturbations and nutrient source management scenarios in the Swedish Norrström drainage basin, based on simulations with the GIS-based dynamic nutrient transport-attenuation model POLFLOW. 5. 40. Long-term metabolic effects of a high birth weight

    Författare :Inger W Johnsson; Jan Gustafsson; Fredrik Ahlsson; Maria Lundgren; Ola Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Body composition; Cardiovascular risk factors; Gestational diabetes; Glucose tolerance; High birth weight; Insulin sensitivity; Large for gestational age; Obesity; Offspring macrosomia; Type 2 diabetes; Endocrinology and Diabetology; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi;

    Sammanfattning : The intrauterine environment influences foetal growth as well as future response to risk factors for disease. This occurs partly through epigenetic mechanisms. Thus, birth weight is a possible risk marker of adult disease. LÄS MER
