  1. 1. The interplay between Giardia intestinalis and host intestinal epithelial cells : A tale of immune activation and suppression

    Författare :Jana Grüttner; Staffan Svärd; Mikael E. Sellin; Steven Singer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Giardia; diarrhea; RNAseq; proteomics; small intestinal epithelial cells; enteroids; organoids; protozoan; differentiation; immune response; host-parasite interaction; swimming; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a non-invasive, protozoan parasite causing the diarrheal disease giardiasis in a variety of mammals, including humans. The parasite has two main life cycle stages; disease-causing trophozoites and infectious cysts. Trophozoites colonize the host’s upper small intestine by attaching to intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). G. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Acute gastroenteritis in Rwandan children under five years of age investigated by real-time PCR

    Författare :Jean-Claude Kabayiza; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastroenteritis; Real-time PCR;

    Sammanfattning : Acute gastroenteritis is a major cause of illness and death among children in developing countries. Knowledge about the aetiology is important to make the right priorities regarding preventive measures, and for the recommendation to use or not use antibiotics. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Sepsis and previously “severe sepsis” are concepts used for denoting organ dysfunction caused by acute infection. Organ dysfunction correlates to increased case fatality rates. Sepsis is a common cause of hospitalization. Currently, sepsis is estimated to annually cause 30 million cases and 6 million deaths worldwide. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Norovirus and rotavirus susceptibility : studies from a Nicaraguan birth cohort

    Författare :Yaoska Reyes; Johan Nordgren; Lennart Svensson; Miren Iturriza-Gómara; Linköpings universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Norovirus and rotavirus are major causes of pediatric acute gastroenteritis (AGE). It is estimated that norovirus is responsible for ~20% of all diarrheal diseases in children worldwide and causes approximately 200,000 deaths each year, mostly in young children and the elderly. 5. 5. Short and long term effects of bacterial gastrointestinal infection

    Författare :Anders Ternhag; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Gastroenteritis; acute infectious diarrhea; Salmonella; Campylobacter; mortality; complications; morbidity; late effects; epidemiology; hospitalization; cohort study;

    Sammanfattning : The objectives of this thesis were to increase our understanding of the mortality and complications associated with bacterial gastrointestinal infections, with focus on Salmonella and Campylobacter enteritis. The effect of antibiotics vs. placebo on duration of diarrhea in Campylobacter enteritis was also examined. LÄS MER
