    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we first aimed to determine whether there may be herpes virus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the aqueous humour of asymptomatic individuals (paper II). Presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) in aqueous humour was measured by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients eligible for cataract surgery.     Sammanfattning : Corneal transplantation is often the only treatment option in cases of corneal blindness, with the main challenges being the scarcity of human donors, risk for graft failure and suboptimal visual outcome due to suture-related issues. Alternative therapies are sought that either address the above transplantation issues directly or stimulate the cornea’s repair mechanism and regenerative properties to restore transparency without the need for transplantation.
