  1. 6. Investigating the origin of radio emission in nearby starburst galaxies via high-resolution metre and centimetre observations

    Författare :Eskil Varenius; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; galaxies: individual: M 82; galaxies: starburst; galaxies: individual: Arp 220; stars: supernovae; galaxies: individual: NGC 4418; radio continuum: galaxies; techniques: high angular resolution;

    Sammanfattning : Star formation and galaxy evolution are intimately linked together. A detailed understanding of the physics of star formation can help us explain how galaxies evolve into, for example, our present Milky Way. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Quasar host galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts

    Författare :Eva Örndahl; Bengt Gustafsson; Jari Kotilainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; Active galaxies; Quasars; Host galaxies; Imaging; Photometry; Magnitudes; Colours; Morphology; Statistical methods; High-redshift; Infrared; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Theoretical Astrophysics; teoretisk astrofysik;

    Sammanfattning : Quasars form one of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, and can be traced out to very large redshifts. By studying the galaxies which host the active nuclei, important insights can be gained into the processes that trigger and maintain the quasar powerhouse. LÄS MER

  3. 8. High-redshift active galactic nuclei and their environment

    Författare :Judit Fogasy; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; galaxies: evolution -- galaxies: high-redshift -- galaxies: active -- galaxies: Starburst -- -- Submillimeter: galaxies;

    Sammanfattning : In order to understand the formation and evolution of local massive galaxies and to reveal the processes that engineered the tight correlations found between their supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and bulge mass or velocity dispersion, the study of powerful, high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their environment is crucial. AGNs are luminous targets providing important clues to galaxy evolution, as their central SMBH is growing at high rates, which opens the opportunity to unfold how the growth of the black hole influences the growth of its host galaxy. 4. 9. Star clusters as engines of galaxy evolution

    Författare :Mattia Sirressi; Angela Adamo; Matthew Hayes; Paul Crowther; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Extragalactic astronomy; Galaxies; Star formation; Interstellar medium; Stellar feedback; Ultraviolet surveys; Hubble Space Telescope; Spectroscopy; Data analysis; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Sammanfattning : Feedback in star forming galaxies is the key process that regulates how many stars form given the available gas reservoir. The radiation, energy and momentum released by the stellar activity and the active galactic nuclei change the physical properties of the gas in the galaxy such as the ionisation state, the density and the kinematics. 5. 10. Searches for Particle Dark Matter : Dark stars, dark galaxies, dark halos and global supersymmetric fits

    Författare :Pat Scott; Joakim Edsjö; Lars Bergström; Jan Conrad; Dan Hooper; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dark matter; supersymmetry; gamma rays; dwarf galaxies; stellar evolution; cosmological perturbations; phase transitions; statistical techniques; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; Cosmology; Kosmologi; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik; Computational physics; Beräkningsfysik; Formation and development of stars; Stjärnors bildning och utveckling; High energy astrophysics; Högenergiastrofysik; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The identity of dark matter is one of the key outstanding problems in both particle and astrophysics. In this thesis, I describe a number of complementary searches for particle dark matter. LÄS MER
