  1. 1. Muscle function in the critically ill : clinical and experimental investigations

    Författare :Karsten Ahlbeck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : It is common that critically ill patients develop muscle weakness in the intensive care unit (ICU), not only delaying mobilisation and increasing the risk of co-morbidities, but also prolonging rehabilitation after hospital care. The aim of this thesis was to describe the diagnosis, time course and possible risk factors for this weakness. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies of diaphragm fatigue and dysfunction

    Författare :Peter J Radell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Diaphragm function; contractility; fatigue; oxidative metabolism; 31phosphorus nuclear magnetic spectroscopy; ultrasonography; prolonged ventilation; compound muscle action potential; myopathy; electroneurography; muscle fiber; morphology.;

    Sammanfattning : Diaphragm fatigue and dysfunction are important components of acute and chronic respiratory pump failure. We lack knowledge about the nature of diaphragm fatigue and the pathophysiological and morphological changes that occur in the diaphragm after prolonged mechanical ventilation. This thesis studied two aspects of diaphragm function. LÄS MER

  3. 3. New Biomarkers for Neuromuscular Function and Myasthenia Gravis

    Författare :Carl Johan Molin; Anna Rostedt Punga; Johan Widenfalk; Nils Hailer; Jan Verschuuren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomarkers; myasthenia gravis; neuromuscular function; neurophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder, which is caused by autoantibodies against the acetylcholine receptor (AChR). The cardinal symptom is muscle fatigue, which can range from slight weakness of the extraocular muscles (causing droopy eyelids or double vision), to paralysis of the respiratory muscles. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy : new insights into the disease mechanism and prospects for pharmacological therapy

    Författare :Laura C Bott; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Expansion of a polyglutamine-encoding trinucleotide CAG repeat in the androgen receptor (AR) gene causes spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA, or Kennedy’s disease). SBMA is an adult-onset disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy due to the degeneration of lower motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Effect of diabetes mellitus on human brain function

    Författare :Gerald Kaushallye Cooray; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :diabetes mellitus;

    Sammanfattning : The following thesis contains four clinical studies. Study I, II and IV were based on a cross sectional investigation on subjects with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) studying the effect of the disease on CNS function through electrophysiological parameters coupled with neuropsychological tests.
