1. Dentin surface conditioning : the role of collagen in dentin bonding
Sammanfattning : Preparation of dental cavities inevitably produces a thin layer of smear, which covers dentin and enamel surfaces. This smear layer, which is between 1 and 10 gm thick, consists of hydroxyapatite, denatured collagen and remnants of cariogenic bacteria. If left untouched, it will weaken the bond between filling material and cavity wall. LÄS MER
2. Expression and regulation of antimicrobial peptides in mucosal immunity
Sammanfattning : Antimicrobial polypeptides (AMPs) are effector molecules of the innate immune defense. AMPs are mainly expressed in epithelial cells and immune cells, providing the first line of defense to infection as direct antimicrobials. In addition, many AMPs display immunomodulatory functions in both the adaptive and innate immune system. LÄS MER
3. Radiological imaging of pulmonary emphysema : preoperative evaluation of candidates for lung volume reduction surgery
Sammanfattning : Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for pulmonary emphysema, first described by Brantigan in 1957, was re-introduced by Cooper et al in 1995. From a surgical point of view, information on the extent and distribution of emphysema is mandatory and also partly determines the outcome. LÄS MER
4. Therapeutic opportunities of alpha-1-microglobulin A study in placenta, blood, skin and eye
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes functional studies of the human protein alpha-1-microglobulin (A1M), with the aim of exploring its usefulness as a therapeutic agent in diseases where oxidative stress is a prominent feature. A1M is a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein with reductase activity and radical- and heme-binding antioxidative functions. LÄS MER
5. Hand-arm vibration syndrome; Consequences for hand function and quality of life
Sammanfattning : Workers exposed to hand-held vibrating machines may risk developing a hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), a condition which can cause chronic impairment and disability. The aims of this thesis were 1) to obtain deeper insight and further knowledge of HAVS and the consequences for hand function, and aspects of quality of life (QoL); 2) to investigate the usefulness of clinical assessments in diagnosing HAVS; 3) to evaluate a treatment method for patients with severe cold intolerance.
