  1. 11. A circular economy approach for sustainable feed in Swedish aquaculture: A nutrition and physiology perspective

    Författare :James Hinchcliffe; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquaculture; sustainability;

    Sammanfattning : One major challenge in aquaculture is the issue of fishmeal replacement as a protein source in aquafeeds. It is agreed that the rate of demand has now outpaced the rate of supply due to the rapid expansion of aquaculture. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Simulation and Optimization of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems

    Författare :Simon Pedersen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dynamic modelling; optimization; biofilter; wastewater treatment; Recirculating aquaculture;

    Sammanfattning : Recirculating aquaculture -- intensive fish farming with water treatment and reuse -- has great potential as a method for sustainable food production. Benefits over traditional aquaculture include opportunities to reduce nitrogen emissions to water, control of temperature, salinity and pH, reduced environmental impact of escapes and better protection against e. 3. 13. Income diversification as a response to social-ecological traps : A case study of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in the Tam Giang lagoon, Central Viet Nam

    Författare :Tong Thi Hai Hanh; Wiebren Boonstra; Melissa Marschke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; alternative livelihoods; aquaculture households; income diversification; fishing households; small-scale aquaculture; small-scale fisheries; social-ecological traps; and Tam Giang lagoon; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Naturresurser och hållbar utveckling;

    Sammanfattning : Many small-scale fishing and aquaculture households in the global South struggle with reinforcing feedbacks between resource degradation and livelihood impoverishment – a situation that is often resembled to a social-ecological trap. Studies suggest that facilitation of income diversification contributes to mitigation and even prevention of trap situations as it reduces exploitation pressure while at the same time makes the households’ livelihood more resilient. 4. 14. Nutrient Transfer in Aquaponic Systems – Optimizing microbial processes for greater circularity and economic viability

    Författare :Victor P. Lobanov; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aquaculture; Aquaponics; Controlled environment agriculture; Waste revalorization; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The trend towards sustainable process design in modern industries combines the goal of improving process efficiency with a conscientious shift towards resource conservation. Aquaponics, a system that involves co-cultivating fish and plants, is a waste-conscious food production system. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Global trade, food production and ecosystem support : Making the interactions visible

    Författare :Lisa Deutsch; Carl Folke; Karin Limburg; Max Troell; David Waltner-Toews; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; global trade; food production; ecosystem support; resilience; agriculture; ecosystem performance; food consumption; ecological footprint; indicators; aquaculture; agricultural intensification; fishmeal; vulnerability; Sweden; animal feed; critical natural capital; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Modern food production is a complex, globalized system in which what we eat and how it is produced are increasingly disconnected. This thesis examines some of the ways in which global trade has changed the mix of inputs to food and feed, and how this affects food security and our perceptions of sustainability. LÄS MER
