  1. 11. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy

    Författare :Malou Friederich Persson; Fredrik Palm; Richard K. Porter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kidney; mitochondria; Uncoupling Protein-2; Adenosine Nucleotide Transporter; uncoupling; diabetes; diabetic nephropathy; db db; dinitrophenol; Coenzyme Q10; oxygen; rats; mice; Physiology; Fysiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. LÄS MER

  2. 12. β-adrenergic regulation of glucose transporters

    Författare :Olof Dallner; Tore Bengtsson; Jeffrey Pessin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adrenergic receptors; glucose transporters; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The transport of glucose across the plasma membrane is a fundamental mechanism to provide cells with its basic requirements for energy yielding processes. It is also vital for clearing glucose from blood into tissues, a process normally stimulated by the hormone insulin in mammals. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Mesentric hemodynamics and effects of angiotensin II during circulatory stress

    Författare :Mats Laesser; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Renin-angiontensin system; angiotensin II; intestines; hemodynamics; perfusion; hemorrhage; hypovolemia; endotoxemia;

    Sammanfattning : Mesenteric hypoperfusion and ischemia is considered to be deleterious to the intestinal mucosal barrier function and it is suggested that the renin-angiotensin system plays a pivotal role in the regulation of mesenteric perfusion.The present thesis examines the effects of the specific AT1 receptor blocker candesartan on mesenteric hemodynamics during acute hypovolemia and endotoxinemia. 4. 14. The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) : possible risk of human exposure, and the effect and function in diatoms

    Författare :Sea-Yong Kim; Sara Rydberg; Sandra Banack; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The toxic secondary metabolites β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) produced by phytoplankton groups such as cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates are known to cause neurotoxicity in vertebrates. BMAA has been linked to development of the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC) and Alzheimer's disease. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Adipose tissue mitchondrial function is modulated by antioxidants

    Författare :Eduard Peris Franquet; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipocyte; metabolism; browning; antioxidant; mitochondria; oxidative stress; adrenergic recpetor; N-acetylcysteine; glutathione; reactive oxygen species;

    Sammanfattning : Antioxidants are widely used as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging agents in experimental research and in conditions where oxidative stress plays a primary role. However, the effect of antioxidant supplementation on white and brown adipose tissue functionality is understudied, and the role of ROS and/or antioxidant treatment during adipose tissue browning, a process in which the adipocytes’ mitochondrial density and activity increase, is largely unknown.
