    Sammanfattning : This thesis considers applications of gradient-based optimization algorithms to the design and control of some mechanics systems. The material distribution approach to topology optimization is applied to design two different acoustic devices, a reactive muffler and an acoustic horn, and optimization is used to control a ball pitching robot.     Sammanfattning : Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by defeciency in frataxin, a highly conserved protein central to iron homeostasis in mirochondria. In this work the influence of the coil and work piece geometry, the effect of the electrical properties of the work piece, and the coil current and frequency, on the magnetic flux density and resulting work piece heating rates were studied.
