36. Magma generation and formation of continental crust in the Izu arc
Sammanfattning : The Izu oceanic arc is produced by the subduction of the Pacific Sea Plate beneath the Philippine Sea Plate. The proto-Izu oceanic arc was initially formed at ca. 50 Ma, then it was separated into the Kyushu-Palau and Izu arc by the extension of the Shikoku basin from ca. 25 Ma. LÄS MER
37. Modulations in Intermetallic Families of Compounds
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on a study of five distinct intermetallic systems with the aim of expanding the general knowledge of aperiodically modulated crystal structures. Families of compounds that contain a variety of superstructures together with incommensurately modulated structures have been investigated mainly by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction and higher dimensional structure models. 38. Material Constraints on Technology Evolution: The Case of Scarce Metals and Emerging Energy Technologies
Sammanfattning : A radical transformation of the energy system in the 21st century will require a large-scale diffusion of a range of new energy technologies. Thin-film solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery-electric vehicles have been suggested as possible major components of a more sustainable energy system. LÄS MER
39. Recycling of nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries; Characterization and recovery of nickel, AB5 alloy and cobalt
Sammanfattning : Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are used today for applications that can assist in the adaptation toward carbon-neutral energy sources (i.e. hybrid vehicles and smart grids). Recovery of metals such as nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements (REEs) from discarded NiMH batteries is important for economic and/or technological reasons. LÄS MER
40. Nanostructured Tungsten Materials by Chemical Methods
Sammanfattning : Tungsten based-materials are used in many different technical fields, particularly in applications requiring good temperature and/or erosion resistance. Nanostructuring of tungsten alloys and composites has the potential to dramatically improve the materials’ properties, enhancing the performance in present applications or enabling totally new possibilities.
