26. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning
Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 27. Amyloid precursor protein : cellular studies and animal models
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by a number of neuropathological features, including extracellular deposits composed primarily of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides. Aβ is derived from proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) by consecutive action of β and γ-secretases. LÄS MER
28. An animal model of sport related concussive brain injury
Sammanfattning : A new animal model for concussion of the type seen in professional football was developed, since current animal models did not simulate these conditions. The model is characterized by a high velocity-low mass impact to the head of a freely moving object. Structural damages and functional effects of the model have been investigated. LÄS MER
29. Estrogen signaling in stroke : genetic and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Stroke is a common and multifactorial disease influenced by genetic and environmental risk factors. It is a highly heterogeneous entity consisting of two main types, ischemic (80%) and hemorrhagic (20%) stroke. The most common form of hemorrhagic stroke is intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). LÄS MER
30. Amyloid precursor protein with the Alzheimer´s disease 670/671 mutation : animal and cellular models
Sammanfattning : The amyloid precursor protein (APP) and it s derivatives play a key role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer s disease (AD), which is characterized by the presence of multiple aggregates of an APP proteolytic product, Ab, and tau protein in the brains of affected patients. Clinically the disease is manifested by a progressive loss of memory and executive functions. LÄS MER
