11. Functional polymer brush coatings for nanoscale devices
Sammanfattning : Nanobiotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that has garnered considerable attention for offering exciting new opportunities of studying and manipulating biomolecules at the nanoscale. This prospect bears large potential benefits in the field of medicine and the whole life science sector in general. LÄS MER
12. Regulation of Lipoprotein Lipase Activity : an In-vitro Study of a Complex and Dynamic System
Sammanfattning : The progress of human society outpaces our biological evolution, and this brings unexpected health problems. The industrial revolution brought up dramatic changes in nutrition and lifestyle – we are increasingly shifting towards a nutrient-rich Western-patterned diet and to a sedentary lifestyle. LÄS MER
13. Site and Mechanism of Action of Resin Acids on Voltage-Gated Ion Channels
Sammanfattning : Voltage-gated ion channels are pore-forming membrane proteins that open or close their gates when the voltage across the membrane is changed. They underlie the electrical activity that enables the heart to pump blood and the brain to receive and send signals. LÄS MER
14. Detection of Lipids and Proteins on Biological Surfaces using Imaging Mass Spectrometry
Sammanfattning : Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a technique that can be used for imaging the spatial distribution of many different molecules at the same time. It is very sensitive for detection of small biomolecules, such as lipids, whereas larger biomolecules, such as peptides and proteins, cannot be detected as intact entities due to fragmentation. 15. Amyloid-β and lysozyme proteotoxicity in Drosophila : Beneficial effects of lysozyme and serum amyloid P component in models of Alzheimer’s disease and lysozyme amyloidosis
Sammanfattning : In the work presented this thesis, two different conditions that are classified as protein misfolding diseases: Alzheimer's disease and lysozyme amyloidosis and proteins that could have a beneficial effect in these diseases, have been studied using Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly. The fruit fly has been used for over 100 years to study and better understand fundamental biological processes. LÄS MER
