  1. 6. Environmental and health aspects of corrosion– importance of chemical speciation

    Författare :Yolanda Hedberg; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Anna Karin Borg Karlsson; Susanna Wold; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : During the last decades, the interest in corrosion of metals and alloys from an environmental and health perspective has increased rapidly as a consequence of stricter environmental and human exposure legislations, their extensive use as implant materials and an increasing understanding related to occupational and/or daily exposure to airborne particles. Corrosion-induced metal release, however, needs to be understood in detail and to include knowledge related to chemical speciation, i. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Stainless Steel in Biological Environments – Relation between Material Characteristics, Surface Chemistry and Toxicity

    Författare :Yolanda Hedberg; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Sasha Omanovich; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Triggered by the regulatory need of the industry to demonstrate safe use of their alloy products from an environmental and health perspective, and by the significant lack of metal release data and its correlation to material and surface characteristics for iron- and chromium-based alloys, a highly interdisciplinary in-depth research effort was undertaken to assess the relation between material/surface characteristics and toxicity with main emphasis on stainless steel alloys. This thesis focuses predominantly on studies made on AISI 316L both as massive sheet and as powder particles, but includes also results for other stainless steel grades and reference metals and metal oxides. 3. 8. Bioaccessibility of Stainless Steels : Importance of Bulk and Surface Features

    Författare :Gunilla Herting; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Stuart Lyon; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stainless steel; iron; chromium; nickel; corrosion; metal release; artificial rain; synthetic body fluids; acetic acid; surface oxide; surface finish; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : With increasing environmental awareness, the desire to protect human beings and the environment from adverse effects induced by dispersed metals has become an issue of great concern and interest. New policies, such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) within the European Community, have been implemented to reduce hazards posed by the use of chemicals on producers and downstream users. 4. 9. Metal release from stainless steels and the pure metals in different media

    Författare :Gunilla Herting; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Lena Wegrelius; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; stainless steel; iron; chromium; nickel; metal release; artificial rain; synthetic body fluid; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This study has been triggered by the fact that stainless steel is being increasingly used in new applications, where possible environmental effects may be a matter of concern. When stainless steel is exposed to a given environment, a key issue is the release of small amounts of the main alloying elements iron, chromium, nickel and molybdenum. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Wood hydrolysate Barriers

    Författare :Anas Ibn Yaich; Ulrica Edlund; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Margaretha. Söderqvist-Lindblad; Inger Odnevall-Wallinder; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood hydrolysate; xylan; hemicellulose; layered silicates; oxygen barrier; packaging; film; coaing; birch.;

    Sammanfattning : Wood hemicellulose is an abundant but fairly unexploited renewable feedstock. Recent studies have shown that hemicelluloses have a large potential for use in the food packaging industry as a sustainable alternative to the conventional oxygen-barrier materials used today. LÄS MER
