  1. 1. Estrogen actions in the growth plate cartilage

    Författare :Maryam Iravani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Estrogens may influence bone growth locally or systemically via the estrogen receptors alpha (ERα), beta (ERβ) and G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER-1). In Paper I, our study showed that the treatment of ovariectomized C57BL/6 mice with a selective ERα agonist 1,3,5-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-propyl-1H-pyrazole (PPT) reduced growth plate height and hypertrophic zone height suggesting that the effect was induced via ERα. 2. 2. The role of estrogen receptor alpha in the regulation of bone and growth plate cartilage

    Författare :Anna E Börjesson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; estrogen receptor α; bone; growth plate; estrogen;

    Sammanfattning : Estrogens are important endocrine regulators of skeletal growth and maintenance in both females and males. Studies have demonstrated that the estrogen receptor (ER)-α is the main mediator of these estrogenic effects in bone. Therefore, estrogen signaling via ERα is a target both for affecting longitudinal bone growth and for bone remodeling. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The role of apoptosis in growth plate cartilage during normal and abnormal growth

    Författare :Dionisios Chrysis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Apoptosis; growth plate; dexamethasone; cytokines;

    Sammanfattning : Longitudinal bone growth occurs at the growth plate where resting chondrocytes proliferate, differentiate into a hypertrophic form, and finally become terminal hypertrophic chondrocytes before giving rise to bone. Because growth occurs when proliferation exceeds cell death, alterations in cell death by apoptosis, which is essential for the maintenance of tissue homeostasis, could affect growth. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effect of shock wave therapy on longitudinal bone growth and growth plate cartilage

    Författare :Sowmya Ramesh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the potential for radial shock wave treatment (rSWT) to regulate growth plate chondrogenesis and longitudinal bone growth. It was based on the hypothesis that the effects are dose-dependent in a bimodal response pattern where low-energy rSWT will increase chondrocyte proliferation/hypertrophy, and thereby bone growth, while high frequency/energy rSWT will induce chondrocyte apoptosis and thereby, premature growth plate closure. 5. 5. Cartilage Tissue Engineering; the search for chondrogenic progenitor cells and associated signalling pathways

    Författare :Maria Thornemo; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :stem cell; progenitor cell; tissue engineering; cartilage; articular chondrocytes;

    Sammanfattning : The socioeconomic cost of articular cartilage related diseases in the Western world is very high. The suffering of the individual patient is even more problematic. LÄS MER
