  1. 1. Impact of Lifestyle, Hormones, and Genes on Breast Cancer

    Författare :Maria Hietala; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Breast cancer; BRCA1; BRCA2; androgen receptor; CAG; GGC; polymorphism; htSNP; oral contraceptives; testosterone; breast-feeding; prolactin; premenopausal women; CYP2D; complementary and alternative medicin; antidepressants;

    Sammanfattning : Approximately 7000 women are diagnosed and 1500 women die from breast cancer in Sweden every year. The aim of this thesis was to study the interplay of polymorphisms, hormone levels, lifestyle, and the use of concomitant medication in relation to risk and prognosis in two cohorts: one composed of young healthy women from high-risk breast cancer families and the other of breast cancer patients from the general population. 2. 2. Characterization of Amino Acid Transporters in the Brain : Molecular and Functional Studies of Members within the Solute Carrier Families SLC38 and SLC6

    Författare :Maria Hägglund; Robert Fredriksson; Farrukh Chaudhry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Amino acid transporter; Solute Carrier; Glutamine; Leucine; SNAT; B0AT; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Solute carriers (SLCs) comprise the largest group of transporters in humans and there are currently 52 SLC families. They are embedded in cellular membranes and transport numerous molecules; defects in many of the genes encoding SLCs have been connected to pathological conditions, and several SLCs are potential drug targets. 3. 3. Protein modification with hydrophobic prenyl groups in malignant cells

    Författare :Magnus Hjertman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Sammanfattning : Mevalonate (MVA) is the key intermediate in the isoprene synthetic pathway leading to the formation of a number of biologically important lipid molecules. It is well known that inhibition of MVA synthesis blocks the cell cycle progression of mammalian cells, a fact suggesting that some isoprenoids derived from MVA are required for cell proliferation.
