21. Management of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms and dissections : with emphasis on spinal cord protection in aneurysm repair and non-surgical treatment of type-B dissection
Sammanfattning : Thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms and dissections are two very serious disease processes which entail a high risk of vessel rupture and death. Their specific treatment strategies have several similarities which have formed a base for this thesis. LÄS MER
22. Astrocytes, reactive gliosis and CNS regeneration
Sammanfattning : The regenerative capacity in the adult central nervous system (CNS) is very limited, and the glial cells have been implicated in the inhibition of CNS regeneration. In essentially all CNS pathologies, astrocytes are activated and this process is known as reactive gliosis. LÄS MER
23. The effect of astrocytes and reactive gliosis on neurogenesis and astrogenesis in mice
Sammanfattning : Astrocytes are the most common cell type in mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin constitute intermediate filaments (known also as nanofilaments), a part of the cytoskeleton, in astrocytes. LÄS MER
24. Inflammation and Cell Profileration Following Perinatal Brain Injury
Sammanfattning : Inflammation plays an important role in cerebral ischemic injury in the immature brain. The aim of the thesis was to investigate (1) the role of astrocyte activation and reactive gliosis in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, (2) the role of complement derived peptide C3a in neonatal HI brain injury, (3) the effect of neonatal HI brain injury on fear learning and behaviour, (4) the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced systemic inflammation on cell proliferation in the developing brain. 25. Cardiovascular, behavioural and metabolic consequences of growth hormone overexpression in transgenic mice
Sammanfattning : Growth hormone (GH) exerts major effects on body growth and metabolism. GH is also important in controlling cardiovascular function and behaviour. To study the role of growth hormone in cardiovascular function and regulation of blood pressure, we overexpressed bovine growth hormone regulated by the metallothionein promoter in mice (Mt-bGH).
