A theoretical model of rational retrospective voting is tested empirically on pooled cross-sectional and panel data from the Swedish Election Studies between 1985 and 1994 supplemented with time series on inflation and unemployment.     Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four independent essays, summarized below.In "Optimal Inflation Targets, Inflation Contracts and Political Cycles", we show that inflation contracts and inflation targets can eliminate both the inflation bias and politically induced variance, if electoral uncertainty merely is due to different preferences.
