6. Evaluation of endodontic treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis
Sammanfattning : Apical periodontitis, an acute or chronic inflamination around the apex of the tooth, is caused by bacteria in the root canal. In Sweden the dentists devote around 10X of their total time to treating this disease. The treatment usually requires 3 to 5 sessions. The treatment may fail in up to 25X of the cases. LÄS MER
7. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast
Sammanfattning : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. LÄS MER
8. Heterogeneities in polymer gels: Effects on swelling and mechanical properties
Sammanfattning : Polymeric hydrogels is a class of scientifically interesting materials that are being extensively studied. They are found in numerous applications within; drug delivery, hygiene products, food industry, analytical chemistry, etc. In addition, polymeric hydrogels have promising future applications as; cell scaffolds, implants, sensors, etc. LÄS MER
9. Phosphorus speciation in Swedish agricultural clay soils : influence of fertilisation and mineralogy
Sammanfattning : Phosphorus (P) is an important element for crop production, but build-up of excess soil P can promote P leaching and eutrophication of surface waters. To better understand the dynamics of P release from soil to waters, more knowledge is needed about sorption patterns and P speciation in agricultural soils. LÄS MER
10. New insights into solubility control mechanisms and the role of particle- and colloid-facilitated transport of metals in contaminated soils
Sammanfattning : Particle- and colloid-mediated transport of metals can be an important leaching pathway in contaminated soils, making it necessary to include this process in risk assessments of contaminant transport. In this thesis, mechanisms involved in transport of particulate, colloidal and truly dissolved lead, chromium, zinc, arsenic and antimony were studied in an irrigation experiment performed on intact soil columns from four historically contaminated soils.
