41. Synthesis of Novel Inhibitors of IdeS, a Bacterial Cysteine Protease Including Studies of Stereoselective Reductive Aminations
Sammanfattning : Abstract The cysteine protease IdeS is an IgG degrading enzyme secreted by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes to evade the human immune system. In this thesis several inhibitors of IdeS have been synthesized and evaluated. Such inhibitors should be highly useful when elucidating the detailed mechanism of IdeS action. LÄS MER
42. The interaction between the neuroretina and the retinal pigment epithelium : an electrophysiological study of the effects of possible messenger substances and their analogues
Sammanfattning : The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is of great importance in photoreceptor homeostasis. The photoreceptors are highly specialized cells which cannot survive without the RPE. It has been postulated that messenger substances are involved in the interaction between the RPE and the inner retina. LÄS MER
43. Application of magnetic nanoparticles and reactive filter materials for wastewater treatment
Sammanfattning : Lately sewage wastewater treatment processes (WWTP) are facing challenges due to strict regulations in quality of effluent standards and waste production. The reuse of wastewater treatment effluents is rapidly gaining attention as a means of achieving sustainable water supply. Therefore, new methods are required to achieve an efficient WWTP. LÄS MER
44. Models for infections in immunodeficiency
Sammanfattning : Increased susceptibility to infections in immunodeficient patients is a well-known phenomenon. The spectrum of infections reflects the underlying defect. Experimental infections in mouse strains with different types of defined immunodeficiencies allow studying the course of infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts. LÄS MER
45. Structural basis of cysteine biosynthesis and peptidoglycan remodelling in Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Sammanfattning : Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the causative agent of tuberculosis, which is responsible for 1.3 million deaths annually. Treatment is difficult due to an elaborate defense machinery, which includes specific metabolic changes of the bacilli upon exposure to antibiotics and the immune response of the host. LÄS MER
