16. Nitric oxide production by the intestinal mucosa during hypoperfusion
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is based on the concept that gastrointestinal blood hypoperfusion is a common phenomenon associated with critical illness. Furthermore, the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is proposed to be initiated by gastrointestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, allowing intestinal luminal contents to penetrate into the tissue and activate a systemic inflammatory response. 17. Factors influencing splanchnic microcirculation in animal models of endotoxaemia
Sammanfattning : Even though severe sepsis and septic shock therapy has improved in recent years, mortality remains high (22-50%). Disturbances in splanchnic organ homeostasis and increases in gut permeability have long been presumed to contribute to systemic inflammation and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in critical illness and septic shock. 18. Vascular and endothelial function in human hypertension, and the importance of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system
Sammanfattning : Background: Hypertension induces structural vascular and cardiac changes with increased arterial stiffness and left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and is major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and the sympathetic nervous system are important for blood pressure regulation and vascular function. LÄS MER
19. New methods to evaluate the effect of conventional and modified crosslinking treatment for keratoconus
Sammanfattning : Background: Today corneal crosslinking with ultraviolet-A photoactivation of riboflavin is an established method to halt the progression of keratoconus. In some cases, when the refractive errors are large and the visual acuity is low, conventional corneal crosslinking may not be sufficient. LÄS MER
20. On angiotensin II receptor type 2 receptors in the small intestine
Sammanfattning : The endocrine renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is important in the regulation of extracellular fluid volume and systemic blood pressure in strenuous conditions such as hypovolemia. Also present locally in peripheral tissues, all components of RAS are expressed and have been shown to modulate development, cell growth and inflammation. LÄS MER
