  1. 26. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS

    Författare :Malin Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; brain; PARP-1; tolerance; global gene expression; apoptosis; cerebral blood flow;

    Sammanfattning : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 2. 27. Microstructural characterization of iron ore green pellets

    Författare :Iftekhar Uddin Bhuiyan; Anders Axelsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Chemical Technology; Kemisk teknologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work was to develop new methodologies to characterize iron ore green pellets, in wet and dry state. The new characterization methods applied and developed in this work were mainly based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to gather both qualitative and quantitative data on different components of the pellets, i.e. LÄS MER

  3. 28. Evolution of the subcortical circuits controlling goal-directed behaviour

    Författare :Marcus Stephenson-Jones; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to reconstruct the minimal neural hardware that vertebrates use for goal-directed behaviour. By studying lamprey, one of the phylogenetically oldest vertebrates, we were able to identify the neural circuitry that has been conserved since jawed and jawless vertebrates diverged over 560 million years ago. 4. 29. Impact of alcohol and drug abuse on hippocampal neurogenesis in humans

    Författare :Gopalakrishnan Dhanabalan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Hippocampus is one of the few brain regions in which adult neurogenesis is known to occur. Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus is considered to be important for higher cognitive function, most notably in memory processes and mood regulation. Alcohol abusers are often diagnosed with memory dysfunction. LÄS MER
