Sammanfattning : We have used mouse and non-human primate models of Parkinson's Disease to analyze neuronal dysfunction, death and repair in the mammalian brain, utilizing the neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). In a series of experiments we assessed the effects of diethyIdithiocarbamate (DDC) on MPTP toxicity, analyzing striatal and midbrain dopamine levels as well as neuronal loss. LÄS MER
18. Neurorestorative strategies involving neurogenesis, neuronal precursors and stem cells in animal models of Parkinson's disease
Sammanfattning : The general aims of the thesis is to provide evidence for neurogenesis in the adult substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), where the dopamine-producing neurons lost in Parkinson's disease (PD) reside; to optimize methods used for detecting newborn nerve cells in adult brain regions with a low rate of neurogenesis; to explore the mechanism of nerve cell death in animal models of parkinsonism and early degenerative and restorative changes in nigral cell populations; and to develop a therapeutic approach that could translate into a future restorative disease-modifying strategy in PD. 20. Characterization of iron ore green pellets by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microtomography
Sammanfattning : Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), image analysis (IA) of SEM micrographs and X-ray microtomography (XMT) were used to obtain new information about the morphology of iron ore green pellets in this work. Cryo-SEM and freeze fracturing was used to observe entrapped air bubbles and arrangement of particles around the bubbles and in the matrix of wet green pellets. LÄS MER
