11. The enterocyte in small intestinal adaption : an experimental and clinicopathological study with special reference to the ultrastructure of the brush border
Sammanfattning : The small intestine mucosa is known to be able to adapt itself to several kinds of both physiological and pathological conditions. The adaptive patterns of the structure of the enterocytes, particularly their apical surface (brush border), were studied in three models: (1) in rats, subjected to antrectomy or antral exclusion, combined with gastroduodenostomy and gastrojejunostomy; (2) in rats with alloxan diabetes; (3) in children with coeliac disease; a) in its active phase; b) after long-term treatment with gluten-free diets; c) after long-term challenge with dietary gluten following treatment; d) after short-term elimination of dietary gluten. 12. Modulation of serous salivary gland function by the sympathetic nervous system : a biochemical and ultrastructural study with special reference to β-adrenoceptor subtypes
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present investigation was to study the influence of the sympathetic nervous system and of various adrenoceptor agents on enzyme secretion and morphology in rat parotid and guinea-pig submandibular glands. Biochemical methods were combined with electron microscopical techniques. LÄS MER
13. alpha-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone in neurodegenerative processes
Sammanfattning : The fact that inflammatory processes accompany the neuronal cell death in most neurodegenerative disorders, has in recent years inspired to studies on the role of inflammation in the brain and the possibility to prevent or stop the degenerative processes by treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs. Neurodegenerative disorders are often accompanied by a progressive loss of memory, and substances that can improve memory functions are of great interest. LÄS MER
14. Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in the central auditory system and correlations with the auditory periphery : the effects of noise and aging in mice
Sammanfattning : This study has examined how calcium binding protein immunoreactivity is modulated in the cochlear nucleus and the inferior colliculus after noise exposure and during aging in mice. The effect of noise exposure on calbindin-D28k (calbindin) and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the dorsal and posteroventral cochlear nucleus (DCN and PVCN) and inferior colliculus (IC) was studied in CBA/CBA mice by using two-dimensional quantification. 15. Studies on nerve terminations in human mucosa and skin
Sammanfattning : In spite of their accessibility and important sensory function, the nervous tissue components of human oral and vaginal mucosa and skin have been subject to very few, if any, systematic investigations. Studies on the innervation of oral tissues have mainly focused on the dental pulp, the periodontium and the gingiva, probably because of specific clinical interest, thus largely neglecting the mucosa.
