21. Hybrid antibacterial microneedle patches against skin infections
Sammanfattning : Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are a major healthcare burden that has increased in incidence since the beginning of the 21st century resulting in an annual spending of approximately 15 b$ in 2012 in the United States (US).1 Treatment of SSTIs is complex and typically involves the administration of antibiotics. 22. Colonization, infection and dissemination in intensive care patients
Sammanfattning : Nosocomial infections are a substantial problem in hospitals all over the world and the incidence is among the highest in the intensive care unit, affecting mortality and morbidity for the individual patient and cost for the society. In order to prevent these infections it is important to gain knowledge about colonization and infection pathways as well as about bacterial dissemination between patients. LÄS MER
23. Harnessing the immunoregulatory capacity of single-stranded oligonucleotides to modulate innate immunity
Sammanfattning : As the first line of defense, the innate immune system is exceptionally efficacious against invading pathogens but must be tightly regulated to avoid immune-related pathogenesis. Accordingly, the innate immune system recognizes highly conserved components associated with infections and damaged cells using a limited number of pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs), which are differentially expressed across cell types. 24. Perioperative Strategies to Prevent Surgical Site Infection After Shoulder Surgery
Sammanfattning : In Sweden, about 18 000 patients undergo shoulder surgery each year. The current surgical site infection (SSI) rate after planned shoulder surgery is 0,3-5 %, which means that approximately 300 people are affected each year in Sweden. LÄS MER
25. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum
Sammanfattning : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO.
