16. Peroxiredoxins in Redox Signaling and Aging
Sammanfattning : Peroxiredoxins have emerged as conserved modulators of the rate of aging in yeast and multicellular organisms and play a role in lifespan extension through the anti-aging intervention caloric restriction. Yet, it is not clear through what mechanism peroxiredoxins extend lifespan. LÄS MER
17. Insulin signaling dynamics in human adipocytes : Mathematical modeling reveals mechanisms of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is characterized by raised blood glucose levels caused by an insufficient insulin control of glucose homeostasis. This lack of control is expressed both through insufficient release of insulin by the pancreatic beta-cells, and through insulin resistance in the insulin-responding tissues. LÄS MER
18. Mechanisms for Quantitative Regulation of TGF-ß Signaling
Sammanfattning : Cancer is a widely spread disease, and many cancer variants are today still difficult to treat. Efforts are being made to understand the complexity of cancer, both at a clinical level but also at a pre-clinical level. LÄS MER
19. Cardiovascular beta-adrenergic signaling : Maturation and programming effects of hypoxia in a chicken model
Sammanfattning : Despite the importance of β-adrenergic receptors (βARs) in cardiovascular disease, not much is known about how prenatal hypoxia effects βAR signaling in the postnatal animal. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to characterize the pre- and postnatal maturation of the cardiovascular βARs and the effects of chronic prenatal hypoxia on βAR signaling in the embryo and adult animal using the chicken as experimental model. 20. Mechanisms of hedgehog signaling activation in cancer development
Sammanfattning : Hedgehog (HH) signaling has an important role in many physiological processes, and deregulation of this pathway can result in a wide range of malignancies. The aim of this thesis is to identify and evaluate the role of various posttranscriptional mechanisms, including alternative splicing, RNA editing and antisense RNAs, associated with different key components of HH signaling.
