6. Firms and people in place : driving forces for regional growth
Sammanfattning : The aim of the thesis is to quantitatively study the driving forces and mechanisms for regional growth from an endogenous and exogenous perspective and reveal the most important factors contributing to regional growth, by focusing on three aspects: local labour market, the supply side and the demand side of the labour market. Sammanfattning : Paper 1: Economic Inequality and HIV in Malawi To analyze if the spread of HIV is related to economic inequality we estimate multilevel models of the individual probability of HIV infection among young Malawian women. We find a positive association between HIV infection and inequality at both the neighbourhood and district levels, but no effect of individual poverty. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : Agriculture faces the challenge of producing high yields to feed a growing world population, while simultaneously addressing environmental problems such as eutrophication, emissions of greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity and soil degradation. Organic farming can be part of the solution, as it promotes biodiversity, uses less energy for fertiliser production and often has higher inputs of organic matter to soil than conventional farming. 10. Institutions and Inequality
Sammanfattning : The paper “Social divisions and institutions: Considering cross-country institutional parameter heterogeneity” investigates the hypothesis that the association between property rights institutions and economic performance is weaker in countries with high social divisions, as measured in terms of ethnic fractionalisation and income inequality. The results of the empirical estimations support this hypothesis and indicate that it could have some relevance for explaining identified regional variation in the institutional parameter. LÄS MER
