6. The Anticoincidence Shield of the PAMELA Satellite Experiment
Sammanfattning : The PAMELA space experiment is scheduled for launch towards the end of 2004 on-board a Russian Resurs DK1 satellite, orbiting Earth at an altitude of 300– 600 km. The main scientific goal is a study of the antimatter component of the cosmic radiation. The semipolar orbit (70. LÄS MER
7. The Sun as a laboratory for particle physics
Sammanfattning : In the paper attached to this thesis, Paper I, we have calculated the flux of neutrinos that emanate from cosmic ray collisions in the solar atmosphere. These neutrinos are created in the cascades that follow the primary collision and can travel from their production point to a detector on Earth, interacting with the solar material and oscillating on the way. 8. Indirect Searches for Dark Matter in the Milky Way with IceCube-DeepCore
Sammanfattning : Many astronomical observations, including rotational curve measurements of stars and the analysis of the cosmic microwave background, suggest the existence of an invisible matter density content in the Universe, commonly called Dark Matter (DM). Possibly, DM could be of particle nature, where Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) could be a viable DM candidate. LÄS MER
9. Regolith Properties of Mercury Derived from Observations and Modelling
Sammanfattning : The properties of Mercury's regolith have been investigated at optical and near-infrared wavelengths with high-resolution imaging, photometric, and spectroscopic observations with the Swedish Vacuum Solar Telescope and the Nordic Optical Telescope. A new global optical map at a spatial resolution of 200 km shows that the well known (from Mariner 10) and poorly known hemispheres are indistinguishable with respect to the distribution, number density, and morphological parameters of bright albedo features. 10. Magnetohydrodynamics of Turbulent Accretion Disks and Planet Formation
Sammanfattning : Planets have long been believed to form in disks of gas and dust around youngstars, interacting with their surroundings via a setof complex and highly nonlinear processes. In the core accretion scenario forgiant planet formation dust coagulates first into km-sized icyand rocky planetesimals that further collide, formingprogressively larger solid bodies that eventually give rise to cores of severalEarth masses.
