1. Contributions to the understanding of diversity and evolution in the genus Coreomyces
Sammanfattning : The Laboulbeniales is an order of enigmatic ascomycete fungi that are obligate microscopic parasites of arthropods, which are usually non-detrimental. They typically display a high degree of host specificity, and the genus Coreomyces, which is the recurring theme of this thesis, is no exception. LÄS MER
2. Point counts and the cohomology of moduli spaces of curves
Sammanfattning : n this thesis we count the number of points defined over finite fields of certain moduli spaces of pointed curves. The aim is primarily to gain cohomological information. Paper I is joint work with Orsola Tommasi. Here we present details of the method of finding cohomological information on moduli spaces of curves by counting points. LÄS MER
3. Stable reduction of curves and tame ramification
Sammanfattning : This thesis treats various aspects of stable reduction of curves, and consists of two separate papers. In Paper I of this thesis, we study stable reduction of curves in the case where a tamely ramified base extension is sufficient. LÄS MER
4. Tautological Rings of Moduli Spaces of Curves
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to study tautological rings of moduli spaces of curves. The moduli spaces of curves play an important role in algebraic geometry. The study of algebraic cycles on these spaces was started by Mumford. He introduced the notion of tautological classes on moduli spaces of curves. LÄS MER
5. Phylogenetic characterization of microbial mats and isolation of Thermus spp. and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria from Icelandic hot springs
Sammanfattning : Until recently, the only way to describe microbial communities was by cultivation. This is a major obstacle because typically only a small fraction of the microbes can be cultivated by standard techniques. However, the use of rRNA and molecular phylogenetic techniques has allowed us to bypass this limitation. LÄS MER
