  1. 1. Parasite on Crayfish : Characterisation of Their Pathogenesis, Host Interactions and Diversity

    Författare :Eakaphun Bangyeekhun; Anders Tunlid; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zoophysiology; Crayfish; Parasite; Oomycete; Prophenoloxidase; Peroxinectin; Aphanomyces astaci; Psorospermium haecheli; White spot syndrome virus; Zoofysiologi; Animal physiology; Zoofysiologi; biologisk beroendeforskning; Biological Research on Drug Dependence;

    Sammanfattning : The crayfish plague refractory crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, which can harbour the fungal parasite within melanotic sheath, are found to constitutively express the gene encoding for prophenoloxidase (proPO) after mimicking parasite attack. In contrast, the susceptible crayfish, Astacus astacus, responds to the parasite by increased levels of proPO transcript, particularly in the semigranular haemocytes. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Bird-parasite interactions : Using Sindbis virus as a model system

    Författare :Karin M. Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Carduelis chloris; Sindbis virus; host-parasite interaction; ornament; social dominance; testosterone; sexual selection; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the evolutionary interactions between birds and a parasite, the mosquito-borne Sindbis virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). In conclusion, the results show that the Sindbis virus is widespread among birds, and that the fitness of infected hosts may be reduced by the virus. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies of Giardia-host interactions: role of cysteine-rich surface proteins

    Författare :Dimitra Peirasmaki; Staffan Svärd; Steven Singer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Giardia; intestinal parasite; parasite infection; host-parasite interaction; virulence factors; HCMPs; cysteine-rich proteins; secretome; proteome;

    Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a eukaryotic parasite that colonizes the small intestine of humans and animals causing the diarrheal disease known as giardiasis. This parasite is not invasive and does not internalize into host cells but it rather attaches to the brush border surface of the small intestine disrupting the epithelial barrier. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Leishmaniasis in Sweden. Molecular, diagnostic and epidemiological studies of the parasite Leishmania in a non-endemic country

    Författare :Sara Karlsson Söbirk; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; leishmaniasis; Parasite; Epidemiological studies; Serology; diagnostic method; Immune System; Sweden; leishmaniasis; Leishmania; immune system; chitinase; CAZy; Immune evasion; Antimicrobial peptide AMP ; Chemokine; epidemiology; Sweden; Serological assays; diagnostic method;

    Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis consists of four separate papers, in which we; investigate epidemiological and clinical aspects of leishmaniasis in Sweden in order to increase awareness of the disease, elucidate some aspects of the interaction of the parasite and the human immune system and validate serological tools as a complement for diagnosis of leishmaniasis.. 5. 5. En broder, gäst och parasit : Uppfattningar och föreställningar om utlänningar, flyktingar och flyktingpolitik i svensk offentlig debatt 1942-1947

    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Sweden; Second world war; foreigners; refugees; refugee policy; ethnicity; Nordic prerogative; History; Historia;

    Sammanfattning : Earlier studies have proposed that Swedish refugee policy started to change around 1942, when a restrictive refugee policy became more generous and humanitarian. From a quantitative point of view this statement is true: there were about ten thousand refugees in 1941, compared to almost two hundred thousand by the end of the war. LÄS MER
