16. Blood flow and cell transport in arteries and medical assist devices
Sammanfattning : The cardiovascular system is responsible for transport of nutrients, oxygen, as well as the cells and molecules making up the immune system. Through the hemostatic system, the body maintains the integrity of the blood vessels, and prevents bleeding. LÄS MER
17. Computational modelling of blood flow in medical assist devices
Sammanfattning : Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving support treat-ment in case of pulmonary and/or cardiac failure. An artificial extracorporealcircuit is used to offload the function of lungs and/or heart. LÄS MER
18. Modeling nanofiber transport and deposition in human airways
Sammanfattning : An understanding of the complex motion of fibrous particles is important in a wide range of areas, including inhalation toxicology, targeted drug delivery, composites manufacturing, paper making, and food processing. While the applications are diverse, the governing equations for the fiber motion may be shared. LÄS MER
19. Flow characterisation of drainage cannulae and centrifugal pumps used in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: an experimental investigation
Sammanfattning : Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving treatment for acute respiratory and/or circulatory failure. Typically driven by a centrifugal pump, blood is drained from the patient via one drainage cannula, oxygenated by a membrane lung and returned to the patient via the return cannula. LÄS MER
20. Modelling Transport of Non-Spherical Particles in Small Channel Flow
Sammanfattning : A model has been developed to predict the movement of oblate and prolate particles on amicro- and nano-scale in laminar channel flow, both for purposes of statistical aggregationand to study motion of single particles. For the purpose of this thesis the model has beenadapted to examine particle deposition patterns in the human lung and the filtration ofparticles during manufacturing of composites, but the possibilities of the model extendto all areas where the particle Stokes and Reynolds numbers are small.
