  1. 36. Ecology, sexual selection and variable mating tactics in fallow deer (Dama dama)

    Författare :Cheryl Jones Fur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates ecological and evolutionary mechanisms behind the variation in male mating behaviour in fallow deer (Dama dama) populations. Two Swedish populations of fallow deer were studied, a semi-wild enclosed population on the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea (Ottenby), and a deer farm located north of Uppsala (Bälinge). LÄS MER

  2. 37. Influence of Mate Quality on Reproductive Decisions in a Fish with Paternal Care

    Författare :Niclas Kolm; Anders Berglund; Ben Sheldon; Kai Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; sexual selection; differential allocation; evolution of egg size and parental care; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Female reproductive decisions have been suggested to be highly influenced by mate quality. I have studied whether offspring quality may be adjusted by females to match the attractiveness of males and how strong control females have over their reproductive investment focusing on egg size. 3. 38. Local Adaptation, Countergradient Variation and Ecological Genetics of Life-history Traits in Rana Temporaria

    Författare :Ane Timenes Laugen; Wolf Blanckenhorn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; amphibians; Bergmanns rule; body size clines; countergradient variation; developmental rate; FST; temperature; QST; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this work was to identify local adaptation processes in amphibian populations, thereby improving the general understanding of genetics and mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity. Phenotypic and genetic variation in life-history traits was studied within and between populations common frog (Rana temporaria) populations along a 1600 km transect from southern Sweden to northern Finland. 4. 39. Developing and optimizing processes for biological nitrogen removal from tannery wastewaters in Ethiopia

    Författare :Seyoum Leta; Gunnel Dalhammar; Jes Ia Cour Jenson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; biological nitrogen and supphide removal; dntififying bacteria; nitrade-reducing; sulphuroxidizing bacteria; nitrate uptake rate; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In Ethiopia industrial effluents containing high contents of organic matter, nitrogen and heavy metals are discharged into inland surface waters with little or no pre-treatment. Significant pollution concerns related to these effluents include dissolved oxygen depletion, toxicity and eutrophication of the receiving waters. LÄS MER

  5. 40. Seed dynamics and the ecological restoration of hill slopes of Kondoa Irangi, Central Tanzania

    Författare :Herbert V. M. Lyaruu; Ingvar Backéus; Jerry Skoglund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; anemochorous; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : Improper agricultural practices such as bill slope cultivation, extensive clearing of vegetation using fire over a long period, and to some extent overgrazing have converted the once fertile hill slopes of Kondoa Irangi in central Tanzania into unproductive marginal land. It is 25 years now since reclamation measures were introduced to save the hills from further degradation, but the regeneration process, has been rather slow. LÄS MER
