  1. 1. Expression of sulfatide in rodent CNS - not only restricted to myelin

    Författare :Zarah Pernber; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :sulfatide; glycosphingolipid; neurons; astrocytes; immunohistochemistry; brain; metachromatic leukodystrophy;

    Sammanfattning : Sulfatide is an acidic glycosphingolipid and a component of myelin in the nervous system proposed to be involved in maintenance of the myelin structure and thereby its function. Sulfatide is also a commonly used marker for detection of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in cultures as well as in tissues. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies of sulfatide expression in relation to beta cell function

    Författare :Maria K. Blomqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :sulfatide; glycosphingolipid; insulin; beta cell; diabetes mellitus; animal models; ; beta cell line;

    Sammanfattning : Previous studies have shown that the glycosphingolipid sulfatide (3´-sulfogalactosyl-ceramide) is present and functionally involved in pancreatic beta cells. In these cells, sulfatide is synthesised as two major isoforms, C16:0 and C24:0 sulfatide, with different length of the fatty acid chain of the ceramide moiety. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Biochemical studies of carbohydrate blood group antigens - Carbohydrate phenotype in relation to cellular glycosyltranferases

    Författare :Mette Diswall; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :glycosphingolipid; glycosyltransferase; genetic modification; carbohydrate; mass spectrometry; proton NMR spectroscopy; xenotransplantation; GalT-KO pig;

    Sammanfattning : The possibility to alter the cell surface carbohydrate expression by insertion or deletion of glycosyltransferase genes is a powerful technique to study the biological function of selected carbohydrate antigens. However, shifting the equilibrium between competing glycosyltransferases might lead to unexpected phenotypic effects, such as accumulation of other carbohydrate antigens and exposure of antigen structures that normally are cryptic or present in minute amounts on the cell surface. 4. 4. Genetics and Expression of Glycosphingolipids in the P1PK and GLOB Histo-Blood Group Systems

    Författare :Julia Westman; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glycosphingolipid; glycosyltransferase; null allele; GLOB; P1PK; Blood group;

    Sammanfattning : The glycosphingolipid (GSL) antigens in the clinically important P1PK and GLOB blood group systems are present on erythrocytes as well as other tissues and are so-called histo-blood group antigens. Blood group antigens of carbohydrate nature are products of enzymes, so-called glycosyltransferases, adding sugars in a step-wise manner to an acceptor substrate. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Norovirus, causative agent of winter vomiting disease, exploits several histo-blood group glycans for adhesion

    Författare :Gustaf E Rydell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :norovirus; glycobiology; virus-like particle; FUT2; ABO H histo-blood group antigen; sialyl Lewis x; neoglycoprotein; glycosphingolipid; QCM-D; supported lipid bilayer;

    Sammanfattning : Norovirus is recognized as the major cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis world-wide, yet no vaccines or drugs are available for prevention or treatment of the virus infection. Challenge studies and binding studies using virus-like particles (VLPs) have suggested susceptibility to norovirus infection to be associated with secretor status. LÄS MER
