  1. 1. Norovirus, causative agent of winter vomiting disease, exploits several histo-blood group glycans for adhesion

    Författare :Gustaf E Rydell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :norovirus; glycobiology; virus-like particle; FUT2; ABO H histo-blood group antigen; sialyl Lewis x; neoglycoprotein; glycosphingolipid; QCM-D; supported lipid bilayer;

    Sammanfattning : Norovirus is recognized as the major cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis world-wide, yet no vaccines or drugs are available for prevention or treatment of the virus infection. Challenge studies and binding studies using virus-like particles (VLPs) have suggested susceptibility to norovirus infection to be associated with secretor status. LÄS MER

  2. 2. O-glycosylation of intestinal and respiratory mucins in health and disease

    Författare :Jessica Holmén Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mucins; oligosaccharide; O-linked glycosylation; mass spectrometry; MUC2; Fut2 enzyme; Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection; Cystic Fibrosis; Ulcerative colitis;

    Sammanfattning : Mucins are large glycoproteins with a diverse O-glycosylation constituting up to 80% of the total mucin mass. The mucus layer covering the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract is largely made up of gel-forming mucins. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies on the biosynthesis of ABH and Lewis epitopes on O-glycans

    Författare :Jonas Löfling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Fucose; Lewis antigen; Blood group ABH; biosynthesis;

    Sammanfattning : ABH and Lewis antigens are carbohydrate epitopes (glycans) found on a wide variety of cell surfaces. They are involved in many biological processes, e.g transplantation rejection, bacterial and viral adhesion, cell-cell communication and metastasis. The in vivo synthesis of glycans is mediated by glycosyltransferases (GTs). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Host susceptibility to rotavirus infection and development of antibody-based immunotherapy

    Författare :Gökçe Günaydın; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Rotavirus infects mature enterocytes of the small intestine of young children and cause gastroenteritis, leading to approximately 500 000 deaths annually worldwide, 85 % of which occur in the developing world. The main objectives of the thesis were to investigate host genetic factors leading to differential susceptibility to rotavirus infections and to develop an antibody-based oral therapy against the infections. 5. 5. Human Caliciviruses: a study of viral evolution, host genetics and disease susceptibility

    Författare :Beatrice Carlsson; Lennart Svensson; Jan Albert; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The viruses described in this thesis are the norovirus and sapoviruses, which belong to the family of human caliciviruses and are known to cause gastroenteritis in humans. Gastroenteritis has emerged as a global health problem and is based on the large number of infected considered as one of the most common diseases today. LÄS MER
