11. Development of Variance Component Methods for Genetic Dissection of Complex Traits
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents several developments on Variance component (VC) approach for Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) mapping. The first part consists of methodological improvements: a new fast and efficient method for estimating IBD matrices, have been developed. LÄS MER
12. The genetic architecture of sexual dimorphism
Sammanfattning : Phenotypic differences between the sexes evolve largely because selection favours a different complement of traits in either sex. Theory suggests that, despite its frequency, sexual dimorphism should be generally constrained from evolving because the sexes share much of their genome. LÄS MER
13. Genetic determinants of breast cancer risk
Sammanfattning : The main purpose of this thesis was to identify genetic risk factors using both hypothesis-based and hypothesis-free approaches. In an attempt to identify common disease susceptibility alleles for breast cancer, we started off with a hypothesis-free approach, and performed a combined analysis of three genome-wide association studies (GWAS), involving 2,702 women of European ancestry with invasive breast cancer and 5,726 controls. 14. Genetic variance and covariance components for across population evaluation of Brown Swiss cattle
Sammanfattning : Dairy cattle breeding is an international business, with trade of animal material across populations. Interbull performs international genetic evaluations of dairy bulls, enabling fair comparisons across populations. LÄS MER
15. Inbreeding, Effective Population Sizes and Genetic Differentiation : A Mathematical Analysis of Structured Populations
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers on various aspects of inbreeding, effective population sizes and genetic differentiation in structured populations, that is, populations that consist of a number of subpopulations. Three of the papers concern age structured populations, where in the first paper we concentrate on calculating the variance effective population size (NeV) and how NeV depends on the time between measurements and the weighting scheme of age classes.
