  1. 1. Nerve lesions in pharynx : an aetiology of obstructive sleep apnoea

    Författare :Danielle Friberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : "Heavy snorers disease" is defined as the progression from habitual snoring to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Apart from a significant weight gain, the aetiology underlying progression to a collapse of the upper airways during inspiration and sleep remains unclear. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Genomics and bioinformatics approaches to functional gene annotation

    Författare :Danielle Kemmer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Biomedical research has been undergoing a quasi-revolution with the dawn of the genomics era. The flood of sequence data from the various genome projects, the task of cataloging the entire coding portion of a genome instead of identifying and characterizing individual genes, as well as technical demands accompanying these developments have posed great challenges to the research community. 3. 3. Beyond bean counting : using patent information to investigate inventive productivity in academia

    Författare :Danielle Lewensohn; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :inventive productivity;

    Sammanfattning : Contemporary universities have multiple missions: to provide education, to conduct research and to contribute to innovation and growth through so-called third stream activities. Examples of the last include both commercial undertakings, such as patenting, licensing, and new business creation, and non-commercial accomplishments, such as social outreach. LÄS MER

  4. 4. From genes to function in autoimmunity : a salty story

    Författare :Daniëlle Vaartjes; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Autoimmunity is a condition in which the ability to tolerate self breaks down, resulting in immune responses against the body’s own healthy cells and tissues. Autoimmune diseases are complex and multifactorial, and both genetic and environmental factors are known to play a crucial role. LÄS MER

  5. 5. MRI at 3 T of brain functions and fibre tracts adjacent to intracranial tumors

    Författare :Danielle van Westen; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiology; tomography; Clinical physics; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; somatosensory cortex; diffusion magnetic resonance imaging; neoplasms; Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of the studies were: to evaluate the spatial resolution of fMRI at 3 T by studying fingersomatotopy in area 3 b of the primary sensory area (Paper 1); to investigate the potential of fMRI at 3T as a clinical tool for preoperative evaluation of patients with intracranial tumors (Paper 2); to investigate the effect of glioma resection on the spatial extent of fMRI activation as compared to the normal within-subject variability (Paper 3); to determine whether the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) can distinguish tumor-infiltrated edema of gliomas from pure edema of meningiomas and metastases (Paper 4). Results: Strict somatotopic organisation in the primary sensory cortex was shown in the group average; at the subject level the thumb was located laterally, anteriorly and inferiorly to the little finger in 94 % of subjects (Paper 1).
