16. Articular and epiphyseal cartilage : its formation, maintenance and repair
Sammanfattning : Long bones develop via a series of ordered processes, initiated from mesenchymal stem cell condensation, cartilage anlagen formation, followed by central cell hypertrophy and vascular invasion and the finalized by the formation of primary and secondary ossification centers (SOC), where the latter is also called endochondral ossification. As long bone develops, it can be distinguished in to several morphologically distinct parts: the main shaft of a long bone, called diaphysis; a narrow disc of growth plate, providing a continuous supply of chondrocytes for longitudinal growth; a thin layer of articular cartilage at the ends of epiphysis, supporting joint movement, and a SOC, sandwiched between the two pieces of cartilage. 17. The role of autophagy in cartilage physiology and metabolism : implications for growth and ageing
Sammanfattning : Cartilage is the main constituent of the embryonic skeleton. At the ends of long bones cartilage forms a growth plate consisting of chondrocytes in distinct stages of differentiation and arranged into three zones. These chondrocytes mediate linear bone growth through synchronized proliferation, differentiation, and production of matrix. LÄS MER
18. Expression and localization of extracellular matrix proteins in rat skeletal development
Sammanfattning : Several novel matrix molecules of cartilage and bone have recently been identified and characterized. Studies of the maturation of the femoral head give clues as to the function of the novel matrix proteins. LÄS MER
19. The role of the microenvironment in growth plate and articular chondrocyte differentiation
Sammanfattning : One crucial process during skeletal development is joint formation. It starts with the interzone appearance characterized by high expression of Gdf5, Gli3, Wnt4 and Wnt9a, low expression of Col2a1 of the local compact elongated cells which subsequently give rise to most joint elements including articular cartilage as the ongoing joint cavitation. 20. Studies on chondrocyte integrins and mechanical signaling
Sammanfattning : Integrins are a family of cell surface receptors known to bind matrix proteins and to mediate signals such as mechanical signals between the cell and the surrounding matrix. We have studied integrins that are expressed by chondrocytes, with specific focus on the integrins that interact with the cartilage matrix protein collagen type II. LÄS MER
