12. Uptake and bioaccumulation of ionizable pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms
Sammanfattning : Pharmaceuticals are found at low concentrations (ng/L) in aquatic environments but bioaccumulation may result in aquatic organisms reaching internal effect levels (µg/L). Environmental hazard assessments include standardized bioaccumulation tests but contrary to the model substances around which the frameworks are built most pharmaceuticals are designed to mimic endogenic chemicals, ionizable, and less lipophilic. 13. Bioaccumulation and biological effects of organic contaminants in Icelandic coastal waters
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, studies on organic contamination from both diffuse and point sources in Icelandic waters are presented. The aim was to investigate bioaccumulation and biological effects of the contaminants or biomarkers, and their applicability in environmental marine coastal monitoring, especially in areas with moderate or low levels of contamination such as Iceland. 14. Uptake Processes of Polychlorinated Biphenyls at the Base of the Pelagic Food Web
Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) are persistent, toxic to biota and are known to bioaccumulate in food webs. In this thesis, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used as model compounds to study the fate and transport of HOCs in the aquatic environment. LÄS MER
15. Platinum Group Elements in Birds of Prey
Sammanfattning : The environmental concentrations of Pd, Pt and Rh (three of the platinum group elements, PGE) have increased since the introduction of exhaust catalysts on automobiles. A limited understanding of the environmental distribution and effects of the platinum group elements has raised concern over their potential biological availability. LÄS MER
