1. Chromatographic Studies of Solute Interactions with Immobilized Red Blood Cells and Biomembranes
Sammanfattning : Specific and non-specific interactions of solutes with immobilized biomembranes were studied using chromatographic methods. Liposomes, proteoliposomes and red blood cell (RBC) membrane vesicles were immobilized by a freeze-thawing procedure, whereas whole RBCs were adsorbed in the gel beds using electrostatic interaction, binding to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) or the streptavidin-biotin interaction. 2. Affinity-, Partition- and Permeability Properties of the Human Red Blood Cell Membrane and Biomembrane Models, with Emphasis on the GLUT1 Glucose Transporter
Sammanfattning : The human glucose transporter GLUT1 is abundant in red blood cells, the blood-brain barrier and epithelial cells, where it mediates the transport of the energy metabolite, glucose. In the present work some properties of GLUT1, including affinity binding of both substrates and inhibitors, transport rates as well as permeabilities of aromatic amino acids and drug-membrane interactions were analyzed by chromatographic methods. 3. Uptake Processes of Polychlorinated Biphenyls at the Base of the Pelagic Food Web
Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) are persistent, toxic to biota and are known to bioaccumulate in food webs. In this thesis, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used as model compounds to study the fate and transport of HOCs in the aquatic environment. LÄS MER
4. Methodologies to assess the fate of polar organic compounds in aquatic environments
Sammanfattning : Polar organic compounds (POCs) are chemicals with polar functional groups in their structure. The functional groups make the compounds hydrophilic and less prone to partition with biota. However, the knowledge of their fate is limited due to difficulties associated with their measurements. 5. Ions in models of articular cartilage : The importance of electrostatic interactions for transport and equilibrium distribution
Sammanfattning : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that affects articular cartilage, which covers the surfaces of the bones in synovial joints. At later stages the disease can result in major loss of articular cartilage and thus lead to major disability. LÄS MER
