26. Organic micropollutants in highway stormwater and the role of a gross pollutant trap-biofilter stormwater treatment train
Sammanfattning : The studies which this thesis is based on assessed the stormwater quality in a highway catchment located in Sundsvall, Sweden, and examined the performance of a gross pollutant trap (GPT)-biofilter stormwater treatment train (TT) downstream of the catchment, in terms of removal efficiency, intra-event variability, and environmental risk reduction of organic micropollutants (OMPs) for the receiving water body. Assessing the occurrence and event mean concentrations (EMCs) of all OMPs in the catchment revealed that bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP), nonylphenol (NP), five carcinogenic and four non-carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and C16-C40 fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) all potentially pose an environmental risk to freshwater (EMCs >PNEC: predicted non-effect concentration), while alkylphenolethoxylates, six low- molecular weight PAHs, and lighter fractions of PHCs (C10-C16) do not occur at problematic levels. 27. Sorption of humic substances and microbial activity in the course of artificial recharge of groundwater
Sammanfattning : Sorption of humic subtances and metal-humate complexes on aquifer material taken from basins used for artificial recharge of groundwater was studied in batch scale experiments. Distribution of bacteria attached to the material from uppermost layer and from the horizons below the infiltration basin were measured in the field studies. LÄS MER
28. Importance of blue mussels for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in subtidal habitats
Sammanfattning : Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., occur on rocky and sedimentary shores worldwide where they often form dense aggregates. These assemblages change the local environment and create unique habitats. LÄS MER
29. Assessing and optimizing biofilter performance in drinking water treatment
Sammanfattning : Biological filtration is a widely used treatment barrier in drinking water treatment plants to ensure the biological stability of treated water in distribution systems. Biofilters remove particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) and biodegradable organic matter from water. LÄS MER
30. Integrating fluvial processes into the global Si cycle
Sammanfattning : Silicon (Si) is ubiqutious in natural waters as dissolved silica (DSi) and is used as a nutrient by many plant and animal species. DSi ultimately derives from the weathering of silicate minerals, a process which also consumes atmospheric CO2 and couples the silicon and carbon cycles. LÄS MER
