1. Chemical substitution with a life cycle perspective: The case of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in durable water repellents
Sammanfattning : The aim of the research presented in this thesis was to support the process of substitution of side-chain fluorinated polymers in durable water repellents (DWRs), that give rise to emissions of hazardous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The focus was on: i) the provision of improved decision support regarding the environmental and human health performance of alternatives, and ii) public readiness for substitution and what messages can motivate consumers to voluntary substitution. 2. Towards inclusion of Biodiversity in Life Cycle Assessment
Sammanfattning : Biodiversity- crucial for ecosystem health and its products and services – is being lost at an alarming rate. While it is clear that human consumption is the main driving force of the considerable losses, conversion of natural habitats for production is continuing and the subsequent intensification of those systems is likely to cause even further biodiversity decay. 3. Technical Alternatives and Energy in LCA
Sammanfattning : This licentiate thesis is based on two papers, a comparative LCA case study paper and a paper on energy issues in LCA. A case study was done in order to investigate which of two compared technologies for chemical recovery in the pulp industry (recovery boiler, RB, or black liquor gasification, BLG) is environmentally favourable. 4. Research on methodologies for impact assessment on biodiversity - the case of bio based products
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACTThe topic of this thesis is impact assessment on biodiversity in life cycle assessment (LCA). With humans in focus, we need the earth’s resources and its biodiversity for our existence and human well-being may depend on the management of the earth’s resources. The earth, however, does not need humans to continue its existence. LÄS MER
5. Resource and Environmental Impacts of Resource-Efficiency Measures Applied to Electronic Products
Sammanfattning : Natural resources such as ecosystems, land, water and metals underpin the functioning of economies and human well-being, and are becoming increasingly scarce due to growth in population and affluence. Metals are increasingly demanded for their specific properties as modern technology develops. LÄS MER
