21. Exposure to inorganic arsenic in pregnancy and metabolism-nutrition interaction
Sammanfattning : Inorganic arsenic is metabolized by most mammals, including humans, via alternating reduction and oxidative methylation with S-adenosylmethionine as main methyl donor. Thus, it seems likely that it is influenced by the availability of methyl groups. LÄS MER
22. Ageing and inflammation with focus on end-stage renal diseases : genetic and epigenetic factors
Sammanfattning : The presence of ageing-associated disorders at a relatively young age in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) has led to the hypothesis that CKD is characterized by accelerated ageing, resulting in a marked discrepancy between chronological and biological age. Factors that accelerate biological ageing, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and toxins, impact the processes of cellular senescence and/or apoptosis, thereby shortening the life span of cells, and consequently, of the organism as a whole. 23. The effect on chromosomal stability of some dietary constituents
Sammanfattning : When food is heated, a vast number of compounds are formed. Some of these are known to be toxic. Among these are furan, HMF, PhIP, IQ, and MeIQx, the subjects of this thesis. All these compounds are known or suspected carcinogens but the detailed mechanisms behind their carcinogenicity have not yet been fully examined. LÄS MER
24. Urologic and metabolic consequences of continent urostomy (Kock reservoir) in children and adolescents
Sammanfattning : During the last decades, urinary diversion using an intestinal segment has been commonly used in children and adolescents. Kock pouch is a feasible alternative for the children in need of a continent diversion where other alternatives such as Mitrofanoff are excluded for various reasons. LÄS MER
25. Vitamin D and its role in obesity and other associated conditions
Sammanfattning : Vitamin D has received much attention in recent years due to the re-emergence of vitamin D deficiency as a global health issue along with increasing evidence indicating that 1,25-dihydroxivitamin D, the hormonally active form of vita-min D, not only acts in calcium and bone metabolism but also generates ex-traskeletal biological responses. In this thesis, the role of vitamin D in obesity and other associated condi-tions has been studied.
