21. Phosphorus removal in reactive filter materials : factors affecting the sorption capacity
Sammanfattning : Phosphorus is an essential component in all living organisms; it is one of the components of the DNA and the key element in the energy supplying molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Throughout the history, humans have been recycling phosphorus to agriculture; thereby increasing the yield, examples of this includes the burning of plants and the use of manure. LÄS MER
22. On-site sanitation systems - An integrated assessment of treatment efficiency and sustainability
Sammanfattning : Small on-site sanitation systems for wastewater collection and treatment are prevalent in suburban and rural areas in many countries. However, these systems often underperform, causing potential impact to the receiving waters and increasing the risks to public health, thus hindering the overall sustainability of the systems. 23. Microbial status of irrigation water for vegetables as affected by cultural practices : agronomic aspects
Sammanfattning : Human pathogens present in irrigation water can be transmitted to plants. Consumption of fruits and vegetables irrigated with pathogen-contaminated water can cause illness in humans. Leafy vegetables that are consumed fresh are particularly prone to cause such illnesses. LÄS MER
24. Comparative analysis of pathogen occurrence in wastewater : management strategies for barrier function and microbial control
Sammanfattning : This project was initiated to fill knowledge gaps on the occurrence of pathogens in different streams of wastewater, e.g. greywater and domestic wastewater. LÄS MER
25. Antibiotic resistance in Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus plantarum
Sammanfattning : Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) may act as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes that can be transferred via the food chain or within the gastrointestinal tract to pathogenic bacteria. This thesis provides data required for assessing the potential risk of using antibiotic resistant strains of the LAB species Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus plantarum as food processing aids or probiotics.
